Fishing Seasons
Looking to visit Islamorada Florida but not sure when to come? There is no bad time of fishing here, always something to chase around here in the keys. Although there is some fish that have seasons. Here I have listed just a few of the fish I like to target on the skiff.
Bonefish
Also known as the grey ghosts, these species are caught with me in shallow waters using soft plastics or fly fishing. Warmer months tend to do better with these fish. In the winter time during warm spells it can be a blast chasing these around!
Permit
The all mighty permit, also known as rubber lips or fancy jacks. These fish require a lot of patience and will give you grey hair but the reward is outstanding! During a warm winter I will start chasing these guys from February through October. Peak seasons would be March-May. Live crabs, jigs and fly fishing are preferred ways to catch them.
Tarpon
The silver king, probably the most desired fish for anglers in the keys. From all sizes these guys are a blast to catch. Even the small ones do everything a large one does. Peak season would be April-May. Although there is some residential fish here year around. Spin artificial, Bait and fly fishing can be productive.
Goliath Grouper
Strong is a understatement for these powerful fish. Hook one of these on some light tackle and you better hold on! Year around fishing is good for these. Bait produces well for these, soft plastics and fly will work.
Snook
These fish are a saltwater bass. Year around fishing is good for them. They love to eat a soft plastic and fly, live bait is really productive for them also!
Redfish
Drum, year around fishing is good for these. usually out on the flats making great sight fishing opportunities. Soft plastics, fly and bait all produces well for them.
